Instead of using the default login keychain, 1Password uses the OS X Keychain Services API to create a brand new keychain called "1Password". You can see all your keychains in Apple's Keychain Access application.

By using a separate keychain you are able to configure separate security rules and keep your data separate from other applications. Each keychain can have its own Auto-lock period, lock on sleep, and MobileMe synchronization rules.
